Peter Mel was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. He is globally and locally conscious of the environment and is encouraging the new generation of surfers to respect our worlds oceans. His father, John Mel has been running their surf shop, Freeline Design, for over thirty-eight years. Now a father himself, with a stepson, Anthony, who is fifteen, and seven year old son, John Michael, named after Peter's dad. He has been surfing some of the largest waves on earth for over a decade and has expressed himself internationally in the many venues available today. He is also an active invitee to the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Honor of Eddie Aikau Contest, Mavericks Big Wave Contest, Jaws Tow-In Contest, Nelscott Reef Big Wave Contest and most recently Red Bull South Africa Big Wave and El Gigante Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Peter is seen throughout the media on a regular basis internationally on CNN, the Discovery Channel, Fuel TV, Movies like Step Into Liquid and Riding Giants. He also graces the covers and pages of Surfer, Surfing, Trip Surf, Newsweek, ESPN, Water, Transworld and Surfers Path.
